Facial Trauma and Restoration

What is facial trauma?

Facial trauma is any injury to the face. More specifically, it is anything affecting a person’s jaw, cheeks, eye sockets, nose, and forehead. Its severity can range from sports-related injuries to accident-induced fractures. In severe instances, health examiners are expected to be on alert if the patient shows any indication of hemorrhages, ocular impairments, compromised airways, or any signs of neurologic injury. X-rays and computed tomography scans, also known as CT scans, are required for the definitive diagnosis and treatment planning of facial traumas.

Facial Trauma and Reconstructive Surgery

Reconstructive Surgery is, from the name itself, advised to people who underwent serious traumatic facial injuries so that their damaged bodily functions like eating, speech or breathing can be rebuilt. A series of facial reconstructive surgery may be expected by patients after an initial assessment. Wires, plates, meshes, and screws are usually utilized during surgical treatment to stabilize bone structures while healing.

What to Expect After Facial Trauma Surgery

  • Swelling and bruising can occur after surgery causing difficulty in eating in the early stage of recovery. Due to this, a soft diet will most likely be advised. The use of straw when drinking will also be likely to minimize discomfort.

  • Aside from the series of surgeries determined by your doctor after your initial procedure, post-appointments may also be required to remove surgical stitches.

  • The time before you can go back to work depends on your body’s healing and the type of work your job requires you to do. With this in mind, consider the chances of you not being able to go back on your normal routine even after one or two weeks.

As each facial trauma’s gravity and each person’s body reacts differently to treatment, it is advised that patients consult with their doctor regularly. Immediate consultation is especially advised to be done when from the incision, bleeding, increased pain, and fever occurs.
