Cosmetic Turned Therapeutic: How Botox Helps TMJD patients

What is Botox

Botox injections are wildly popular for cosmetic reasons. They are injected to muscles so that they cannot contract, lessening and softening the appearance of wrinkles in return. They are often used to treat deep crow’s feet, frown lines, and laugh lines.

In addition to its cosmetic uses, not many know that it has proved to be effective in treating pain associated with other conditions located in the cranial area as well. One of these conditions is the temporomandibular joint disorders or TMJ disorders, a condition in which the joint allowing us to talk, yawn, or chew becomes inflamed or displaced.

How Do Botox Treat TMJD

Botox injections are used to treat patients with TMJ disorders as they lessen jaw tensions and relax the jaw muscles. Specifically, they limit the movements of the temporalis and masseter muscles, relieving them from pain. Most injections of botox administered for TMJD last between 3-4 months. Post-injection, patients are advised to avoid massaging the area where the treatment  and sit upright for hours so that the botox does not spread to parts they are not intended for; and administer cold compress to relieve discomfort.
