Introduction
The Annual Beut & Jelks Oculoplastic Symposium is an event of great interest of health care have to be held in October, between the 20th and the 23rd, in Mallorca. The symposium is a collaboration of two world-renowned surgeons, Dr. Francisco Javier Beut1, based in Palma and Dr. Glenn Jelks2 professor at the New York University. Both specialists have pooled resources to offer a unique event, not only nationally but across Europe.

The Annual Beut & Jelks Oculoplastic Symposium focuses on treatments of the periocular tissues (adjacent to the eye: eyelids, nasolacrimal duct, cheeks, eyebrows, etc.). The treatment approaches will be made from two perspectives: surgical and nonsurgical, each of them including reconstructive and aesthetic procedures. Oculoplastics is a young branch of surgery halfway between Ophthalmology and Plastic Surgery, which can also be tackled from other medical specialties such as otolaryngology, and maxillofacial surgery or surgery related to dermatological diseases. It is important to establish clear protocols of action and a systematic approach to pathology and treatments in the periocular area that currently are not unified; a situation that allows many instances of intrusion to the detriment of the patient to be treated by staff which may not be sufficiently qualified.

The symposium program has been planned in a phased manner from the most basic concepts of periocular anatomy and basic surgical procedures to reach the most difficult cases of facial reconstruction and postoperative complications. The structure of the Symposium will allow assistance to
selected days depending on the level and interest of the audience.

Given the nature of the event, one of the main motivations from the technical perspective is the teaching; through presentations and lectures by expert surgeons and specialists as following live surgeries, the symposium also includes a technical manual and DVD's in exclusive 3-D technology.

Local benefits relating to this symposium and its positive impact on research and professional training are summarized below:

  • Prestige: Invited speakers attending this conference are highly rated surgeons from different countries, they exchange for the common good information the latest techniques and advances used in different countries. Many of them are pioneers in reconstructive surgical techniques, aesthetic surgery and non-invasive treatments.
  • Universality: Given the global impact of the organizers and speakers attending the symposium, we anticipate an attendance of professionals from many countries on our island, leading to increased visibility of Mallorca to host scientific meetings in the field of health care have initiator of conference tourism in Spain.
  • Improving local surgical services: In addition, the host of the Annual Beut & Jelks Oculoplastic Symposium envisages assistance of our local medical professionals, representing an opportunity to improve training.
  • Investment in the future: It is an event open to residents of Surgery and currently there are few opportunities for training in this particular area. Following the model of formation of Cirujanos Plastikos Mundi, this Symposium is the heir of the teaching approach for those who represent the future of the profession.
  • Technological innovation: The formative nature of the Symposium includes practices from one operating room that will be broadcast live via videoconference to the hall. To ensure the best possible quality, it is foreseen to install an innovative technology that is not currently available on the Island and that will give a fixed infrastructure replay of this type of activity in the immediate future. It is also expected to attend the symposium can be virtually through a website link and a direct connection via the Internet; this means that the Symposium in Mallorca can be "visited" by millions of people.
  • Business opportunities: It provides an exhibition area which will bring together many foreign companies whose products nowadays do not have national distribution. It will be a showcase of companies and technologies to local distributors and surgeons may benefit.
  • Involvement of the institutions: It is expected that local institutions are not only knowledgeable, but attend the event. Minister of Health and the Minister of Education have been invited and organizers maintain contact with the related Regional Departments of the Balearic Islands Government: Tourism, Health, and Commerce.
  • Another sector involved are the different Spanish scientific societies such as the Teaching Foundation of the Spanish Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (SECPRE), the Spanish Society of Aesthetic Surgery (SECE) and the Spanish Society of Aesthetic Medicine (SEME), the Spanish Society of Oculoplastics (SEO) and the Medical Association of the Balearic Islands (COMIB)

  • Solidarity: October, the 23rd is aimed to an open Forum of Surgery and Development Cooperation with the participation of important figures of NGOs worldwide. For this day we count on the support of representatives from Stanford University (USA), University of Valencia, Universitat de les Illes Balears, the Swiss Cooperation Agency, the Vicente Ferrer Foundation, the Cape Craniofacial Foundation (India), The University of Salamanca, AMREF (Kenya) and the Spanish Society of Humanitarian Surgery, among others.

The symposium has the following programs:

  1. Meetings and scientific presentations.
  2. Two sessions of parallel operations commented live by videoconference directly to the meeting rooms.
  3. Practical parallel workshops on non-invasive / non-surgical treatments : injections, laser, peelings,etc.
  4. Day of Surgery and Development Cooperation, by the hand of Cirujanos Plastikos Mundi -CPM Foundation.
  5. Golf Tournament on 24 October and cultural and leisure activities for companions during the four days of the symposium.

In addition, add to the benefits listed above, not to be forgotten, the known socio-economic benefits that involve the development of business tourism in our region:

  • Regulates the seasonality of tourism demand, when tourism resort that used to host Baleares is concentrated between the months of April through September.
  • Create jobs, usually qualified.
  • Mobilize locally a lot of money as a result of productive linkages with other economic activities and constitutes a factor of promotional efforts.
  • Besides, the business tourism can indirectly feed general tourism on the island, since according to the World Tourism Organization, approximately 40% of visitors return to the meeting place with their families, friends or colleagues.
  • Supports the promotional efforts and multi-destination Mallorca seasonally adjusted, in an activity of high added value.
