Following our first article on Breast Cancer Awareness and Breast Reconstruction, the second of this two-part series will talk about Breast Augmentation, and its potential implications.

It is worth mentioning that some types of breast implants may increase the risk of developing cancer in some patients, which is why we emphasize the need to seek the proper specialist when considering breast augmentation.

However, our PAPRAS doctors recommend that for patients who undergo this type of cosmetic procedure, practicing good breast health and staying informed or educated are still crucial steps to mitigate the risks of breast cancer.

About the procedure

Also referred to as “boob job,” this cosmetic procedure involves the enhancement of the size and shape of the breasts, usually conducted through the insertion of implants beneath the breast tissue.

Breast Implant Safety

Depending on your body type, breast anatomy, and skin elasticity, our PAPRAS surgeons can help recommend the most suitable implant type and size, and incision area to achieve a softer, natural-looking augmentation, with minimal scarring.

Here are some of the common types of implants:

Saline Breast Implants

Saline breast implants are filled with sterile salt water, which provide uniform shape, feel, and firmness.

Structured saline breast implants

Also filled with sterile salt water, structured saline implants are designed to give a more natural feel to the breasts.

Silicone breast implants

Silicone breast implants are filled with silicone gel, which are quite closer to natural breast tissue. For patients who prefer this type of implants, more frequent visits to your PAPRAS doctor may be necessary to ensure that the implants are functioning properly.

This is typically tested through an ultrasound or MRI screening.

Gummy bear breast implants

Firm implants are sometimes referred to as gummy bear breast implants because they maintain their shape even when the implant shell is broken.

Shaped gummy bear breast implants are more prominent at the bottom and are tapered towards the top and require a slightly longer incision in the skin.

Round breast implants

Round breast implants have a tendency to make breasts appear fuller than the firm or Gummy bear type of implants.

Smooth breast implants

Smooth breast implants are the softest in touch and give off more natural movement.

These may have some visible rippling under the skin.

Textured breast implants

Textured breast implants develop scar tissue to stick to the implant, making them less likely to move around inside of the breast.

Practicing good breast health after a breast augmentation procedure

Self-assessment is still very important. Practice the TLC (Touch. Look. Check) method and get to know your implants, the same way you would do normal bodily checks without them.

Women can and should still do their routine mammogram checks to maintain good breast health. Make sure you advise your specialist that you have breast implants since this will require a different way to conduct mammograms or x-rays.

Maintaining both the quality of your breast implants, and taking care of your breast health both involve having a balance between awareness and self-assessment, coupled with frequent consultations with your doctor.
