What’s Liposuction?

Also called “lipo”, this surgical procedure is done to remove fat from specific areas of the body through a suction technique. Areas commonly subjected to this procedure are the abdomen, buttons, arms, and neck.

Who Is The Ideal Candidate For Liposuction?

Expected risks of surgical procedures can be worse for some people due to their lifestyle and health background. However, if you meet the following requirements you may just be the ideal liposuction candidate:

  • Be a non-smoker

  • Be within 30% of their ideal body weight

  • Have good skin elasticity and muscle tone

  • Be a healthy individual with no life-threatening illness that can affect the surgical healing process

Kinds of Liposuction Procedures

Your surgeon will determine what kind of procedure/s you can go through based on your goal and your area of concern. With that said, these are the kinds of liposuction treatments they may recommend:

  • Tumescent liposuction - the most commonly administered technique; this outpatient procedure is done through the injection of a very dilute solution of local anesthesia to the subcutaneous layer of the skin, making it swollen and firm, therefore, making fat cells easier to remove

  • Ultrasound-assisted liposuction - also known as UAL, this procedure delivers ultrasonic energy and heat into subcutaneous fat cells, causing them to liquefy before being removed

  • Laser-assisted liposuction - this treatment makes use of laser technology to emulsify fat deposits that would later be sucked out of the area using a cannula

What You Can Expect After Treatment

Recovery until normal physical activity can take up to six weeks. After the treatment, your surgeon will advise you about the medications you can take to alleviate discomfort, the follow-up consultations you need to attend, and the complications you should watch out for. Bruising, swelling, and soreness is normal in the post-surgical healing stages. However, if the pain is severe, patients are advised to contact their PAPRAS surgeons right away.
