What Skin Resurfacing Treatment Suits You?

What Are Skin Resurfacing Treatments?

Skin resurfacing treatments aim to reveal a healthier-looking skin by removing the damaged outer layer of the skin and encouraging new, healthy skin to grow. They can lessen the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, and skin discoloration, reversing the signs of stress and aging.

Types of Skin Resurfacing Treatment

Below are some skin resurfacing treatment options patients can choose from:

  1. Laser Skin Resurfacing

There are two types of skin laser resurfacing treatments—non-ablative and ablative. Both of them heat up the targeted tissue to stimulate collagen production. The only difference is that ablative treatments remove the top layer of the skin (epidermis) to encourage the growth of smoother and tighter skin while doing so. Types of ablative treatments include carbon dioxide and erbium laser procedures while non-ablative ones include pulsed-dye and intense pulsed light (IPL) therapies.

  2. Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion is a technique that removes the outer layer of the skin through controlled surgical scraping. General anesthesia is administered before the actual treatment to keep the patient as comfortable as possible. It can be done alone or in combination with other treatments; and is used to decrease the appearance of fine lines, age spots, and acne scars.

  3. Chemical Peels

Chemical peel treatments rely on chemical solutions that cause the outer layer of the skin to peel away. They can provide light, medium, and deep peels. During treatment, a solution is dabbed or brushed onto the skin and left for a certain period of time. As days pass, the area where the solution is applied will peel away, revealing a smoother, lighter skin.

  4. IPL Photorejuvenation

Intense pulse light therapy improves skin color and texture by using high energy light pulses from multiple wavelengths to stimulate collagen production in the upper layers of the skin. It can address hyperpigmentation, redness, rosacea, fine lines, and age spots; and requires little to no downtime.

The kind and length of your skin resurfacing plan will depend on the concern you have. Most patients see results after three or four treatments. While being treated, they are generally asked to wear sunscreen and limit their sun exposure for protection. They may also be asked to drink supplements like vitamin C and collagen to aid their skin’s growth.
