Gynecomastia

What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is an increase in the amount of breast gland tissue in a man’s or a boy’s body often because of an imbalance of estrogen and testosterone. Due to this, the male breasts become bigger—or at times, uneven in size. Mostly, this condition happens to teenagers but it may also happen in adult males and in newborns.

Symptoms and Conditions Associated with Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is usually benign although there are conditions that are considered to be the cause of it. Such are as follows:

  • Thyroid disorders

  • Liver disease

  • Kidney disease

  • Congenital disorder

  • Pituitary gland tumor

Symptoms of the condition on the one hand include painfulness, swelling, nipple sensitivity, and nipple discharge in one or both breasts.

Treatment of Gynecomastia

Most cases of Gynecomastia resolve eventually even without treatment. However, if there are more underlying conditions behind its existence, then that’s when intervention may come in. Doctors would prescribe the patient a treatment based on their age, medical history, current medical treatment, their own preference of treatment, and the severity of their condition itself. Possible surgical treatment for Gynecomastia include Liposuction and Mastectomy. The former removes only the breast fat while the latter removes the breast tissue itself.
