What is Plastic Surgery?
Plastic surgery is the branch of surgery involved with correction of defects (loss of tissue) and deformities (appearance is different from the normal) of the human body. As such, the specialty is not limited to any particular part of the body, but is defined more by the techniques it uses.
To correct these defects and deformities, the plastic surgeon calls upon his knowledge of the structure of the body, and how it heals itself. Using various methods of transferring tissue, occasionally using nonliving material, lost tissues are replaced and form is improved. This skill in shaping the body can be used for improving both form (aesthetic or cosmetic) and function (reconstructive). |
